3 Questions to Ask When Looking For a Martial Arts School
#1: What Are You Looking For?
Your first question should be internal - What is it you're looking to achieve from your martial arts experience?
For Kids:
-- Amazing focus?
-- Rock-solid confidence?
-- Safety-conscious kids?
Teens:
-- Valuable life skills that help you get ahead in school or work
-- Safety and peace of mind for you and your parents
-- Leadership training that opens doors of opportunity
-- Fun with friends doing valuable activities
How about for the adults?
-- Practical self-defense
-- A good workout to help you get fit
-- Camaraderie and Teamwork
-- That extra edge in the workplace
-- FAMILY TIME that won't break the bank
All these benefits and more are just waiting for you! Your school should offer the things you're looking for as part of their curriculum, not just something learned by osmosis. From the very first lesson, you'll want to see these things modeled in the instructors, the students and in yourself or your child.
#2: Will You Be In the Area for 12 Months or More?
Every lesson worth learning takes time and consistency. Anyone can start a program, a diet, a budget, but it's the ones that stick with it that achieve their goals.
Look for schools that offer 12 month and longer membership. A month-to-month club is just that, and it may not provide the stability or commitment to you that's needed to achieve your goals.
#3 Are You Committed to Learning?
Are you willing to commit the resources necessary to come to classes 2-3 times per week? Are the goals you have for yourself or your child worth moving some things around in your schedule to accommodate?
Will you encourage practice time with your teammates outside of class? Even five minutes of practice with a teammate before or after class can help you and your child learn so much faster and allow those lessons to sink much deeper than if you just come and go from class.
Will you make time, space and encourage practice at home? Students need to learn at their own pace, and practice outside of class allows just that. Your time, your way, your speed. When working with your children, the more actively involved you are with their learning, the more excited they will be in turn and willing to practice at home with you. There's no better win-win situation!
